Alan, I think the site's great. My mother's family name is Trevithick and her home village was Sithney, near Helston so I'm wondering if we are related in any slight way to Richard Trevithick, the engineer. Perhaps an enlightened soul out there can help with that.
Best wishes to all Cornish exiles, near and far.

Don Penhollow in Walled Lake, Michigan, U.S.A. at 23:20:43 Sunday June 11 2000
For the greater part of my 57 years on this side of the pond I have proudly responded to inquiries of my family that my family originated in Cornwall. In the past few months I have found that there is one Penhallow remaining in Cornwall. Victor Penhallow has passed his interest in family history to one of his sons, Kevin whose web site has been a very rewarding experience. I suppose I should not have signed in to your web site without first looking it over. But, your biographical schetch leaves me with no need to doubt its quality and most certainly educational value. Cornwall has recently become to me more than just a place that I say where our family originated. It has become a place I would like to visit. I am a father of four, one still at home, and a technical editor of substation operations manuals for a large Southeastern Michigan electric utility.
Thanks for your very interesting site.
Best Wishes from us in the U.S.

Alan: I am b----y slow in entering your CLD logo but be patient with me.
I am finding more time to try to update my attempt of a Flamank Web page so, one
of these days you will be pleased to see the Logo.
Also, we have initiated a new Cornish Association here in our Okanagan Valley
of this Province of British Columbia. It is called the "Okanagan Cornish Cousins".
We only have 10 so far but at a Gathering on the 28 May of the 10 of us it was
clear that our motly group would grow.
For now, greetings from a sunny, warm Kelowna.

I liked the jokes - reminds me of a conversation with a friend when I was on a visit to the town during the summer tourist season before I returned to retire here in my birthplace. I'd noticed a lot of Belgian, French, German and Dutch cars driving around. I said to my friend "There's a lot of foreigners here this year!" He replied: "Ayse - 'n a lot of people from overseas too!!"

I am proud of my own Cornish heritage, and hope someday that many of you will be able to visit the ranch here and see how we live out in the country. As you may have discovered we had several mines in the area, one of which the "Black Diamond" mine was of course coal. Another in Grass Valley, also gives tours, but it still gives up gold, and both were worked almost exclusively by 'cousin Jack, who married his darling Jenny. The names were so common just before the turn of the century in California among the Cornish miners, the ubiquitous mules also
went about under the same 'pet' names! Unlike many other pioneers from around the Celtic Sea region, my family came here quite early, when a forebearer became a regent for the Viceroy of Spain, and so essentially what
is called the California Rancho lifestyle was
an outgrowth of necessary planning on the part of the regional government of Northern California, due to small population, however the discovery of gold changed all that and then larger waves of migrants from Back East
carriewd in the Cornish tin miners with Irish
gold miners. The two worked side by jowl in many states, such as Montana and Nevada, and
Arizona, and Colorado. But only California was actually organised by a Cornish "Colonia"
of administrators serving the Spanish King. This was odd because reports were that the
Eastern Seaboard of the United States had as
its first 'gentlemen' none other than what Americans call "The Cornish Pirates," Raleigh, Kidd, Morgan, Gilbert, Hawkins, adn so forth. Whether they were Cornish or not is
debatible, but the period saw one of these on
the shores just miles from the Old Rancho, in
the adventuring Francis Drake, who had just plundered the Spanish for a ship of gold, silver, platinum ('long' silver), emeralds,
and a few other worthwhile objects, the main;
platinum, was sinking the ship, so they put ashore in Marin COunty in 1579, to effect repairs. That is memorialised by the Living History Theatre yearly in its world reknown production, Renaissance Faire. We have a park
here which commemorates the Drake visit-and
according to Indian and Spanish tales, is a
site which was later appraoched by the Captain Cook voyage for the Roayal Society to
Tahaiti where they were to shoot the transit of Venus. Many of the Bounty crew and family
also have similar stories in that they had
more than a few originating from the Isle of Man. They of course ended up on Pitcairn. But
our background is somewhat different as there
was a large Celtic element in the Spanish servitors here, before it became American. If
many were Irish or Scotish or Welsh, there was almost that of each, in Cornish numbers.
The first cowboy movies in the world were filmed here on our property. I hope to see
some of you in the very near future. Keep up the excellent work in preserving our heritage. I am hoping to learn more about the homeland.
