I'm researching my gr-gr-grandfather, Robert Hicks
who immigrated to Ontario with his wife Hannah, or he married her in Ontario around 1820-30.
Their first born was a son Samuel John born in Northumberland County, Ontario about 1845.

Very nice site - I hope to get what I am looking for
and that is my grandmother's family. G.Grandfather and G.Granmother
took 2 youngest children for holiday to India. Both G. Grandparents and
gran's brother died and grandmother was left in a convent cause she
couldnt get back. Married out there, but came back home and died in
Southampton, where she is buried. Her name was Caroline, Maud, Augustus
ROWE. I believe there were more brothers and sisters left back in Truro.
She was born in Truro in Cornwall on 26th December 1869 or 1870. Died in
1955 and was buried in St. Mary's church, Pear Tree Ave., Bitterne, Soton.

I'm a born and raised cornishman, and i'm proud of it. I would like to now how far my family line to cornwall goes back because no one in my family knows, it is such a long time ago. It is annoying to know that there are few real cornish left in cornwall and I prey for a revival of an all cornish county and hopefully soon to be country.... I appreciate that people want to enjoy this beautiful land but when I walk down the street I see very few people who are cornish and I believe that the cornish culture and way of life is suffering too much due to this, cheers Gavin Roseveare

We're going outside and we may be sometime.
Twenty-five years I grew, nurtured on Cornwall and the Cornish manner, the Cornish-ness that is now part of me. I still day-dream, of a 'T' shirt that promulgates "I'm 1OO% Cornish and proud of it..." ...is that all I have to cling to? (I haven't even got this day-dream of mine).
I spent a harboured childhood full of Cornwall’s 'riches, pebbles & sand, fizzy-pop in cans, wind and rain, tunnels, holes, alleys & bunkers, vast sun scorched gorse torched views, I could see both coasts from our bathroom window. Spirits of the sea always whisper to me, the loudest whispers I've ever heard, I've heard it in Long Rock and Leicester, Crewe and Nice, I saw a little red boat barely afloat. I cried at the beauty surrounding me as the holiday-ers screamed & sizzled & laughed. I sat alone at the end of the phone and ran with the gang at low tide across St Ives Bay on new years day. We drank and we sang and played in the band. Gran bought saffron buns at Sunday-school treat, and pasties and pasties and pasties. Slept in the snow on Carn Brea, laughed at what nan & granddad would say (that's not the granddad I never knew, who died in the fishing boat accident). Ate winkles with pins and vinegar picked from Porthleven harbour, got filthy. Held on tight as the storm wind rips so hard it bites. Sat in a haystack in the sun and got covered in mites. I've lay for hours and been soaked up by the whole of Mounts Bay, on the clearest, hottest ever, hottest ever day. Walked home at midnight from Hayle to Camborne, met a girl in Redruth and another in St Just, got drunk in Crantock, earnt a wage in St Ives, saw a dream in St Austell, learnt some verbs in Fowey... grew to man from boy in Cornwall...
...only, they're all memories.
I return and see the most rugged of faces smile and share the day like children returning to play, waves so worn from years of scorn, skies so blue thy seem brand new. A scarred town refuses to frown, yet sings and raises its glasses, everywhere I look I see me and I see pasty smiles, Rugby miles, unique cornwall style saying this is us but we do say we.
I've moved away now, don't know why, but I know I can't go back, jane's not there, craig's gone, david's moved on, so has jon, matthew's in Manchester, lisa's in Suffolk, richard's in Cardiff, kay's in bath, lee is in Luton and mark is in Crewe, and I'm in Leicester 'cos we wanted something new. Cornwall, in essence has everything there, God and the Devil are surely within, but it hasn't got what I'm looking for.... what am I looking for?
I'm going outside and I maybe sometime...

Much of interest here, to one whose great-great-great granparents were born in Cornwall (James Richards in Helston, Susanna Phillips in St. Austell) and emigrated to Prince Edward Island, Canada, in 1808, after starting a family in Guernsey. If anyone knows more about James and Susanna's forebears I'd dearly love to hear from you. Alan, are we related?

I am researching early Cornish history which is inextricably bound to the histories of Dumnonia, and the celtic kingdoms of southern Britain, with a view to making a Docu-Drama of the real history of our country (Kernow). One that is kept somewhat hidden by mainstream broadcasters.
I would welcome any input.
