My grandmother Doreen Richards was born in Trescowes near Penzance and came to America during the war. My dream in life was to see her birthplace, and I finally visited the home where she was born this past fall on a magical trip Howard Curnow arranged for me. I will never be the same. Cornwall was so terribly beautiful, as were the people. Thank you Cornwall for your hospitality.

I recently visited Cornwall for the first time and, of course, fell in love with it. I was able to visit the grave of my great-great grandparents (Charles and Elizabeth Harry) in the church yard at Breage. Charles was killed in 1846 in an accident at the Wheal Vor mine, leaving his wife to raise 8 children, 6 of whom later immigrated to both South and North America. I am unaware of any living relatives still in Cornwall, but would love to hear differently! Thanks.

I posted an entry about Sammy the Penzance Train Station Cat. She was most endearing. The story about her is in present sense. Imagine children arriving as tourists. It would be very suitable to have Sammy still in the station, as a bronze or carving perhaps. Maybe Brit Rail would contribute to a Sammy Memorial Fund. What do you think? Remember, she went to Cat Heaven in 1976, if memory serves.

We studied Sammy the Penzance Station Cat more than 2 decades ago. She is still very much in our hearts. http://nancywrites.tripod.com/sammy.   This time she is teaching children about bad people rather that using awful words like "terrorist". We wonder if Muriel Davies and Len Farrel are still alive. God Bless, Glenn and Nancy Bowie

I am writing my autobiography for my granddaughter, and have a number of memory holes. I remember what St. Clare's looked like 50 years ago!, but would love to get some more information to flesh out my memories. Can you help? I spent a lot of my childhood in Cornwall, we lived at Mousehole when I went to St. Clare's. I took the bus in everyday. Any memories around the 1956-7 period would be gratefully received.

Mmm! Not sure how I stumbled upon your site, but seeing the Cornish pasty on your pages sure made me hungry! It's great to see that someone has taken the time to describe what a "real" pasty is! I've heard of a lot of weird things being put into pasties, but RHUBARB sure is NOT one of them! Luckily for me, Joe's Pasty Shop and Nancy's Pasties in Butte, MT still makes them the right way! I think I'll head there for lunch today, even though they're not quite as good as grandma's!

Alan - I last visited your interesting site in 2000. Very pleased to chance upon it again tonight and to find, once again, all sorts of fascinating tidbits and fascinating people. Very pleased to see you are going strong. I have marked the site as a "Favourite". I work in Brisbane, Australia and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (where I am the only Cornish representative at present). I am a bookseller and include Cornish books in my stock in Australia (don't wish to advertise on your site, however!). In my last message to you in 2000, I mentioned that BRO GOTH AGAN TASOW (OLD LAND OF OUR FATHERS) is the pan-Celtic National Anthem of Cornwall and is also the Gorsedh Anthem. So, in the Cornish spelling which I learnt when I was a youngster, "Meerasta-why" - "Thanks" for your excellent web-site.

http://netministries.org/see/churches/ch08378 Hello: Alan, I really enjoy surfing through your many wonderful pages. I am a first generation American, the first born American in my family. All of my family including my brother are from the Camborne Cornwall area. As a teenage youth I spent nearly a half a year there, living in my Grandfathers home. I have since returned to Cornwall for a month, and taken my wife with me, her family is all from Mousehole, Cornwall. Much of my family is still scattered about Cornwall today, Truro, Newquay, Camborne, etc. I love Cornwall and anything Cornish, Including the girl I married.

As an ex-pat Cornishwoman I was interested to see that you live in Hornchurch. When I was a child living in Falmouth we had some great friends who lived in Hornchurch and my parents and I would often make the long journey in our little Morris Minor up the A30, A303 and dreaded North Circular to visit them. They would visit us in turn. I used to envy them living near the bright lights of London and they thought living in Cornwall was idyllic - I know what they mean now I'm older and wiser!!

I got into your site via a link relating to diaspora. My interest is in the St Austell area, specifically Polkerris where my brother Gordon Reeve Bennett has traced our family history to. I am surprised how meaningful the link with Polkerris seems to be for me! I feel as if at last I have found some roots! I don't want to get into an unrealistic fantasy about all of this, but would like to understand more about ordinary life in pre 1950 Polkerris and environs back as far as possible. I look forward to further exploring your site. Best wishes Sheila

Hello from Downunder. I had your details passed to me in 1997 by my half 3rd cousin, Roberta Peeples nee Richards from California but I've only picked up my research (first started in 1982) since moving to Melbourne from Sydney last year. I am working on a project to enter all the data I've collected from my own research in Cornwall and from others and carefully merge matching information using Family Tree Maker Software. The West Cornwall names from Zennor west to Redruth and south from Camborne/Redruth to Helston and Gunwalloe/Cury to Lizard Point I'm collating are: Tremelling & var., Richards, Jewell & var. (+ Menheniot, Poughill in the East), Berryman, Bosanko, Wills, Dower, Thomas, Ivey, Polerick, Bawden) and also in East Cornwall & Devon Lillecrapp & var. Info as it progresses will be available at http://members.datafast.net.au/~arichards/family

Originally from New Zealand and now living in Australia. I have just embarked upon researching the family tree on my father's side. His grandfather, James STRONGMAN, was born at Trevillian Cottage in Newlyn to John STRONGMAN and Betsy STRONGMAN (nee HENWOOD). He sailed to New Zealand aboard the 'Salisbury', arriving in Auckland in 1876. On Dad's mother's side, his grandmother, Bessie DOWSING (nee TONKIN) was from Liskeard and arrived in New Zealand when a child. Therefore, this site is of great interest.

What a find! As they say, a Cornish person is more patriotic when he/she has left Cornwall. One day I long to see the home of my forbears.
Phil Trescothick in Keynsham Bristol. at 00:12:34 Tuesday January 20 2004
Great to see such interest in the old county from all over the world. The Trescothick clan, or at least my wing of it originated in the Redruth area, especially Porthtowan, a great little spot on the coast. The family was strong in the county, my father being one of twelve children, now the older generation has almost disapeared. There are still Trescothicks from my clan in Cornwall, Bristol, Southampton and Nice in the South of France. However, and the line will continue. I welcome any contact from lost relatives or any one interested in the family.

Hi, I am a student in my final year of BA (hons.) Photomedia at Plymouth College Of Art, and I am working on my final major project which is a short Arthurian film, I am looking to try and find an ancient site (standing stones/ dolmen/ stone circle something or some mystical place in east Cornwall or west Devon to film at, or something possibly like Roche's Rock, or Dozmary Pool I thought that you, as involved in Cornish history and culture might be able to help me. The locations I found, I could not even find the contact details for the owners!!) with a view to a possible days film shoot 21st February but I have had no success, I was hoping that maybe you might be able to help - I cant seem to get replies from the tourist boards or national park people!!! I was originally going to film at St Nectans Glen but the owner after initially being most helpful, now doesn't answer my letters and emails to nail down the details exact dates etc in writing as I need to do. this is a really serious project, slated to be submitted to Cannes in March and I really hope that someone who knows of a location will actually take my project as seriously as it actually is! If you need to confirm my project, my tutor is Mark De Valk - contactable at mdevalk@pcad.ac.uk and you can read more about my project at http://www.angelfire.com/film/pendragon. I do hope one of you can help, if you can please either reply to this email or call me on 07855 090589 I do need to find a place with a contactable owner- as I have to conduct this project professionally I do need written (not emailed) permission to film at whatever location.. and I am limited with transport difficulties, to a 60 mile radius of Plymouth blessings Laura
